Nigeria Boost Oil Output with 46 Rigs

Nigeria’s crude oil rigs rose from 44 last week to 46 yesterday, as reported by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, an engineer, shared this information in Abuja during a Strategic Workshop for Media Practitioners hosted by the NUPRC’s Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Unit.

He stated, “And once again, I proudly report that as of today (Wednesday), the last time I checked—since I have my dashboard that I review daily as part of performance evaluation—I mean, to assess our current status on a daily basis.

“I have been working with an incredibly resilient team that is dedicated to driving, optimizing, and valorizing our hydrocarbon resources. The current count is 46.”

It is worth noting that on July 2nd, during the Nigerian Oil and Gas (NOG) Week 2025, he announced a total of 44 rigs, an increase from the previous eight.

He mentioned that the NUPRC was established during a period when crude oil production was decreasing from one million barrels.

He clarified that, as a regulator, the NUPRC is tasked with undertaking all necessary measures to promote investment, focusing efforts on increasing production by an additional one million barrels annually.

The Chief Executive indicated that by the time the one million project was initiated in August 2024, crude oil production had increased by 300,000 barrels per day.

He remarked, “Currently, we observe a positive figure of approximately 300,000 barrels of oil per day. This achievement is one that I am quite proud of.”

As of now, Nigeria’s output stands at around 1.7 million barrels per day.

Komolafe expressed that the industry’s feedback has been very encouraging, as operators continue to submit positive reports.
