‎Obio/Akpor Administrator Inspects Flood-Prone Areas, Orders Demolition of Illegal Structures on Waterways‎‎

The Administrator of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Ndu Walter has conducted an on the spot inspection of flood ravaged areas around Eliozu and Eliogbolo axis following consecutive days of heavy rainfall that have brought significant hardship on business operators and residents of those areas.

‎Speaking during the inspection, the Administrator citing several illegal structures along drainage channels, which obstructed the natural flow of water into canals immediately directed the Flood Committee and the Sanitation Taskforce to begin immediate demolition of all illegal structures obstructing the waterways.

‎”Obio/Akpor has been identified as one of the LGAs most prone to flooding this year. In anticipation of this, the local government had set up a Flood Response Committee to develop proactive measures for mitigating the impact.”

‎”We have experienced flooding in the past, but what we are witnessing now is the worst in the history of this area. This is largely due to blocked drainages caused by indiscriminate construction along water channels.” Dr. Clifford stated.



‎”As a local government, we sympathize with all residents affected by this unfortunate situation. We are taking decisive steps to manage the crisis and reduce further damage,” he affirmed.

‎Dr. Walter appealed to the Rivers State Government to urgently intervene in the desilting of canals, clearing of drainage and other emergency responses that would complement the actions of council in tackling the flood problem.

‎”What we have seen is overwhelming. The scope of this disaster requires partnership between the local and state government. We are calling on the state government to assist and support us in tackling this menace.”

‎Dr. Walter reassured residents of Obio/ Akpor of his commitment to work tirelessly to ensure that the flood situation does not escalate further.
