NFF Extends NPFL, NNL, And NLO Board Tenures

NFF

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally approved a significant one-year extension for the governing boards of three key football leagues in Nigeria: the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the Nigeria National League (NNL), and the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO).

This decision, which extends the tenure of these boards until September 29, 2026, was strategically made to synchronise their operational timeline with the conclusion of the current NFF administration, led by its esteemed President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON). The alignment ensures continuity and stability in the management of Nigeria’s domestic football leagues as the federation pursues its broader objectives for the sport.

These boards, originally inaugurated on July 1, 2023, were entrusted with a two-year mandate to oversee and enhance the operations of their respective leagues. The initial term was set to expire on June 30, 2025. The NPFL board is chaired by Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, a respected figure in Nigerian sports administration, while the NNL is led by Chief George Aluo, and the NLO is under the stewardship of His Excellency Silas Ali Agara. Each board has been instrumental in steering their respective leagues toward greater professionalism and competitiveness over the past two years, earning commendations from the NFF for their dedication and achievements.

In a detailed statement released by the NFF’s Media Department, the federation expressed its satisfaction with the performance of the three boards since their inception. The statement highlighted the significant strides made in improving the organisation, visibility, and overall quality of the NPFL, NNL, and NLO. The Executive Committee lauded the boards for their body of work, which has contributed to elevating the standard of domestic football in Nigeria.

However, the NFF also issued a forward-looking charge, urging the boards to redouble their efforts in delivering leagues that are not only well-packaged but also highly attractive to football managers, stakeholders, and fans across Nigeria and the African continent. The federation emphasised the importance of continuous introspection and innovation to ensure the sustained growth and development of the game, fostering a football ecosystem that all stakeholders can take pride in.

While the NPFL, NNL, and NLO boards received this extension, the NFF Executive Committee decided to defer any decision regarding the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) board, which is currently led by Nkechi Obi. The federation indicated that further deliberations on the NWFL board’s status would take place at a later, unspecified date, allowing for additional evaluation of its progress and contributions to women’s football in Nigeria.
