The International Fencing Federation’s most recent rankings, released following the 23rd African Fencing Championships, position the 20-year-old athlete at an impressive 65th in the men’s senior sabre category. This milestone marks a significant moment for Nigerian sports, highlighting the growing prowess of the country’s fencers in the international arena.
Akinyosoye, who is based in the United Kingdom and previously represented England at cadet and junior levels, showcased his exceptional skill and determination during the championships held at Charterhouse in Lagos. His standout performance came in a gripping preliminary bout where he stunned spectators by narrowly defeating Tunisia’s Olympic silver medallist, Fares Ferjani, with a close score of 5-4. This victory propelled him to the quarterfinals of the individual men’s sabre event, cementing his reputation as a formidable competitor and a rising star in the sport.

In the senior men’s epee category, Nigeria boasts a strong contingent led by Mahadi Idongesit, who is ranked 206th worldwide. He is closely followed by Wisdom Okanlawon at 209th, Mahathir Idongesit at 212th, and Adegbola Babade at 215th, demonstrating the depth of talent within the Nigerian fencing scene. In the men’s foil category, Oritsematosan Egbesemirone stands out with a commendable 116th global ranking, while Olumuyiwa Ige and Alex Aninyei hold positions at 502nd and 504th, respectively.
