Former Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has emphasised the significance of choosing the appropriate mix of players in preparation for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), conveying his confidence in the squad’s capabilities and resolve to succeed in Morocco.
Waldrum, who is presently the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh Panthers women’s soccer team, pointed out that Nigeria’s players possess the quality and ambition necessary to reclaim the WAFCON title, provided that the correct selections are made.
“If I select the players, I believe the talent is sufficient on its own to secure victory,” Waldrum stated. “There is ample ability present, particularly building on the accomplishments at the World Cup and Olympics. Those players are driven and eager to regain the title.”
Despite his confidence in the players’ skills, Waldrum warned that success could be jeopardised if the wrong combination of players is chosen.

“They are capable of achieving it, but if the incorrect mix of players is summoned, it could lead to difficulties,” he cautioned. Morocco and Ivory Coast will be well-organised, and teams such as Zambia, Cameroon, and Ghana are consistently challenging. The composition of players across African nations makes a significant difference.”
While he voiced some concerns regarding the overall coaching framework, Waldrum reaffirmed his trust in the players themselves.
“I do not believe the coaching is currently at the level required to succeed on the global stage, but with the right player selection, their talent could still suffice. I remain hopeful that the players can accomplish it,” he acknowledged.
