A peace meeting brokered by President Bola Tinubu has brought an end to the longstanding political rift between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja resulted in a final agreement between both camps to work together in unity.

Wike stated that both parties have agreed to put aside their differences and work together for the progress of Rivers State.

The agreement marks the end of a prolonged crisis that has plagued the state since Fubara assumed office in May 2023.

President Tinubu’s intervention has been instrumental in resolving the rift, with both Wike and Fubara expressing gratitude for his efforts.

Fubara pledged to preserve the fragile unity achieved during the meeting, emphasising the need for peace to drive the state’s development.

The power tussle between Wike and Fubara began shortly after the latter assumed office, with tensions escalating in October when members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara.

The conflict led to a governance crisis, prompting President Tinubu to intervene and facilitate a fragile truce in December 2023. However, the arrangement broke down, and the conflict resurfaced, culminating in President Tinubu declaring a state of emergency on March 18, 2025.

The resolution of the rift between Wike and Fubara is expected to have a positive impact on the development of Rivers State, with both leaders committing to working together to drive progress and stability.

The success of this agreement will depend on the willingness of both parties to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal.
