Fubara and Amaewhule Meet in Abuja to Resolve Rivers State Political Crisis

In a significant step toward resolving the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara held a reconciliatory meeting with suspended House of Assembly Speaker Martins Amaewhule and other disgruntled lawmakers in Abuja. Sources reported a positive atmosphere, with Fubara and Amaewhule seen sharing jokes and laughter, signalling a potential breakthrough.

The closed-door meeting, described as the first direct effort to mend ties between the governor and the lawmakers, reflects Fubara’s commitment to peace, according to a source who spoke to The Cable. The source noted that the governor has initiated meaningful engagement to resolve the crisis.

Fubara’s suspension followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 19, prompted by escalating political unrest. The National Assembly approved the decision, appointing retired Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas to manage the state for six months. While Fubara had previously met with Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, this meeting with the lawmakers is seen as a pivotal move toward lasting peace.

Wike had emphasised that reconciliation hinges on Fubara addressing grievances, particularly with lawmakers who were allegedly deprived of salaries and allowances for over two years.
