OMT Unveils Solar-Powered Water Project to Combat Scarcity in Ogu Community

In a move to address water scarcity and improve the well-being of its host communities, the Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) has commissioned a new solar-powered water project in Ogu, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The project, unveiled on Wednesday, consists of four solar-powered water supply systems—each with a 4,000-litre capacity. It forms the latest phase of OMT’s Safe Water Scheme, an initiative launched in 2023 to improve access to clean and sustainable water sources in the region.

During the commissioning, OMT’s Managing Director, Mr. Nicolo Scannavini, reaffirmed the terminal’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. He described the water scheme as part of a broader plan to uplift the quality of life in Ogu and neighbouring communities. According to Scannavini, the new systems are strategically located across the community to maximise access and ease of use.

This latest phase builds on the groundwork laid in 2023, when three similar systems were first installed. Scannavini acknowledged that two of the earlier units currently require refurbishment and assured community members that repairs would be carried out swiftly.

He also recognised the significant role Ogu indigenes play in the company’s operations, highlighting the contributions of one of its top cargo-handling managers who hails from the area.

Appreciation poured in from local stakeholders. Secretary of the Ogu Divisional Council of Chiefs, Lawrence Inuma, praised OMT for its continued commitment to the community. He noted that the project would go a long way in easing the burden of water shortages and called for sustained investment, particularly in youth empowerment and job creation.

Support also came from OMT’s Community Liaison Officer in Ogu, Steve Davids, who described the new installations as a more dependable solution to the community’s water needs. With the solar-powered systems no longer tied to grid electricity, residents can now count on a stable and uninterrupted water supply.

The Onne Multipurpose Terminal, located within the Onne Port Complex, is a major logistics and cargo handling hub in Rivers State. Serving as a critical gateway for maritime trade across West Africa, OMT provides a range of terminal services including container operations, cargo handling, and warehousing.

With this new water project, OMT continues to deepen its social impact—matching infrastructure with empathy, and logistics with legacy.
