As the world marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, June 26, 2025, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the growing scourge of drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.
Speaking to commemorate the day, Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, expressed deep concern over the rising trend of substance abuse, particularly among young people, and called for urgent, collaborative action across all levels of society.
This year’s theme, “Breaking the Chain: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All, aligns with YEAC-Nigeria’s mission to foster a healthier, drug-free society through advocacy, education, and community engagement.
“Drug abuse and illicit trafficking have become a significant challenge in Nigeria, with devastating impacts on individuals, families, and the nation as a whole. The consequences range from increased crime and social unrest to strained health systems and declining educational outcomes.”

While urging a firm approach to curbing drug trafficking and organized crime, YEAC-Nigeria also emphasized the need for humane and rehabilitative responses for addicts.
Support for Community-Based Interventions. The organization championed the development of grassroots initiatives that aid in the rehabilitation and social reintegration of individuals battling addiction. Dr. Fyneface noted that YEAC-Nigeria is committed to partnering with relevant stakeholders, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in amplifying sensitization and awareness campaigns across Nigeria.
“On this important day, we call on everyone, government officials, parents, teachers, religious leaders, and youth advocates, to join hands in breaking the chain of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. “Together, we can build a society where every Nigerian has the opportunity to live free from the grip of drugs and thrive in a safe, healthy environment.”
