Opobo-Epellema Link Road Project Symbolizes Resilience Amid Political Tension

Amid ongoing political tension and democratic disruptions in Rivers State, a significant symbol of progress and resilience is steadily taking shape across Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area. A 5.75-kilometre link road—complete with a 450-meter bridge is currently under construction, connecting Opobo to Epellema and Kalaibiama communities.

Awarded to Monier Construction Company Nigeria Limited (MCC) by the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara on June 7, 2024, the project is more than a road it is a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting inclusivity, and delivering development to underserved areas.

An aerial drone image of the project site shows the road cutting a clean, modern path through the lush rainforest, serving as a physical and symbolic bridge between communities long separated by geographical and infrastructural barriers.

The project features: A 5.75km stretch of asphalt road with a spur, a 450-meter bridge currently under construction. Solar-powered street lighting for environmental sustainability and nighttime safety. Described as one of the flagship projects of the Fubara administration, the Opobo-Epellema-Kalaibiama Link Road is expected to be completed and commissioned within the governor’s current term.

More than a transport corridor, it is being hailed as a testament to a governance style rooted in service delivery and inclusive development, rather than political rhetoric. As the road continues to rise from the mangrove swamps and dense terrain of Opobo/Nkoro, it brings with it renewed hope for mobility, commerce, and unity across the region.
