Cement Prices Adjusted Across Nigeria

The recent surge in cement prices in Nigeria has significant implications for the construction industry and ordinary citizens. A 50kg bag of cement now costs ₦10,500, marking an 8.25% increase from ₦9,700 in the previous month.

This price hike is attributed to rising transportation costs, with dealers struggling to maintain profitability. Cement price in Nigeria ranges from ₦9,500 to ₦11,500 per 50kg bag as average price; ₦8,400 as lowest price and ₦11,500 as highest price (observed in Lagos and Rivers states).

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed concern over the soaring cost of cement, citing its adverse impact on infrastructure projects. He appealed to manufacturers to reduce prices, considering the stabilization of the foreign exchange rate. Umahi suggested a price reduction to ₦7,000 per bag, which could support road network rehabilitation nationwide.

In response to high construction costs, the federal government plans to build affordable, climate-smart houses using bamboo for low- and middle-income earners. This initiative aims to provide eco-friendly housing solutions and alleviate the burden of expensive building materials.
