Nigerians Urged to Purchase Drugs From Certified Pharmacies

Nigerians have been called to always patronize certified drug dealers to stay safe from the hazards of fake drugs. The Head of the Pharmaceutical Department, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Mr. Promise Anele, who said this in an interview with newsmen, noted that the issue of fake and substandard drugs is common in developing countries as a result of poverty and ignorance.

Mr. Anele listed the reason for the proliferation of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria as ineffective regulation in the industry. He appealed to relevant authorities to adequately fund government agencies such as the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria and the National Agency for Drug Food Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to carry out their duties effectively.

“The government need to do more to support these agencies to carry out their legitimate duties. That would create the chances of reducing fake and adulterated drugs. If we strengthen our regulatory responsibility it would be effective in curbing fake drug”, he said. Mr. Anele pointed out the disadvantages of consuming adulterated drug to include damaging of vital organs.

“We talk about economic waste and depending on the situation you are managing. If one is managing a life-threatening illness, he may become a victim”, he stated. He frowned at the importation of drugs into the country, stressing the adverse economic effects it has on the Nation.

“When these drugs are imported, it impacts the cost of the medication. Once the cost is high, not too many people would not be able to procure their medicine in other to get treated. They begin to look for alternatives. Secondly, it does not help to develop the local drug industry”, he explained. The Pharmacist enjoined all stakeholders to collaborate to tackle the menace of fake drugs in the Federation.
