‎Stakeholders Call for Collective Action Against Desertification

World drought prevention day

The need for a healthier and sustainable planet has been emphasised as the global community marks World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

‎The Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, who stated this at a one-day symposium in Port Harcourt organised by the institution with other stakeholders on issues of the Environment, called for collective action to preserve natural resources.

‎National President of Waste Management Society of Nigeria, Mr. Essien Akpabio, in a paper presentation, called for suitable policies, government and private sector collaborations to achieve a healthier environment free of greenhouse emissions that cause desertification and drought.


‎While commending the efforts of the government on the environment, Mr Essien pointed out that fish in the water, trees and plants on land have all been affected by pollution and may lead to desertification and drought if suitable actions are not taken.

‎17th June annually is observed as World Day to combat desertification and drought and this year’s theme is, Restore the Land.
