A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Monday granted bail to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele in the sum of N2 billion.
Justice Halilu Yusuf approved the bail after Emefiele was arraigned on an eight-count charge, including allegations of illegally acquiring a 753-unit housing estate and diverting billions of naira through proxy accounts.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had accused Emefiele of financial misconduct during his tenure as CBN chief. The court also ordered him to provide two sureties with property worth the bail sum within the FCT and to surrender his travel documents.

Legal experts say the case could significantly affect Nigeria’s financial sector. Emefiele, who has denied all charges, was previously detained for months over separate allegations. The case has been adjourned to a later date for further hearing.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of high-profile corruption cases in Nigeria. Observers await the next steps as the trial unfolds.
