Nigerian Defender Semi Ajayi Closes in on New English Club

According to a report from Goal, Hull City is reportedly nearing an agreement to sign the seasoned Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi, who was released by West Bromwich Albion this summer. Ajayi’s contract at The Hawthorns concluded at the end of the 2024/25 season, and it was announced that he would depart the club at the end of June, joining Grady Diangana and John Swift, who left in May.

This occurred after a season in which West Brom finished ninth in the Championship, falling four points short of a play-off position. The season was also marked by significant upheaval within the club, as manager Carlos Corberan departed on Christmas Eve to assume the vacant managerial role at Valencia. The Hull Daily Mail indicates that Ajayi is “anticipated to be another addition in the near future” for the Tigers, as they aim to rebuild under new manager Sergej Jakirovic.

The publication noted, “Defender Semi Ajayi, the 31-year-old Nigerian player who departed West Brom at the season’s conclusion, is expected to be another addition soon.” They report that the club and the player are nearing an agreement on personal terms for the 31-year-old, which would facilitate his move to The MKM Stadium. “The conditions of his free transfer to the MKM Stadium are believed to be close to finalization.”

Ajayi has earned 43 caps for the Super Eagles and was somewhat sidelined at The Hawthorns last season, prompting him to seek a new challenge this year. If this transfer is confirmed, Ajayi will be joining a club that is also welcoming a new head coach. Hull dismissed Ruben Selles in mid-May, but it was not until mid-June that Jakirovic was confirmed as Selles’ successor, having served as the head coach of the Turkish Super Lig club Kayserispor during the latter half of the 2024/25 season.
