Kamaru Usman’s victory marks his first since 2021 and follows a series of challenges, including the loss of his welterweight title to Leon Edwards in August 2022.

After nearly four years without a victory and ongoing doubts regarding his performance decline, Kamaru Usman made a powerful return to prominence on Saturday night with an impressive display at UFC Atlanta — one that reaffirmed his status among the greatest welterweights in MMA history, as reported by MMAfighting.

The former champion not only triumphed over Joaquin Buckley — he thoroughly dismantled him. From the initial bell to the final horn, Usman utilised the skills that established him as a legend: relentless wrestling pressure, dominating top control, and an unyielding stamina. It was a classic Usman performance, and the timing was impeccable.

“It feels good. It’s been a while,” Usman stated after achieving his first victory since losing the welterweight title to Leon Edwards in August 2022. “I needed to remove that burden from my shoulders. I know I am still capable of competing at the highest level. It is crucial to apply my skills and experience. I feel good.”

Numerous fans and analysts had dismissed Usman following consecutive losses and an extended hiatus filled with discussions about his declining knees. However, when the cage door closed, it was the former champion — not the emerging contender — who appeared to embody the future of the division.

“I understand it’s a running joke,” Usman remarked. “Everyone wants to go online and spread nonsense. Oh, his knees, his knees! Well, be quiet, I can still perform at my best.”

And he certainly did. Usman exerted his dominance over Buckley, taking him to the mat repeatedly with precise technique. He inflicted an early cut, maintained Buckley on the canvas for extended periods, and thwarted nearly every attempt to rise. Even when Buckley rallied in the final round, Usman’s control had already secured the decision.

The match was not merely a victory — it was a declaration. After years at the pinnacle and a tumultuous descent, He came back to take what he still believes is his.
