Call for Voluntary Blood Donation in Port Harcourt Intensifies

‎As the world marked this year’s Blood donation day, Nigerians have been called upon to voluntarily donate a lifesaving blood. The Acting Director, Armed Forces Blood Center in Port Harcourt, Lieutenant Colonel Waya Musa who made the call after a sensitization walk emphasised the need for more voluntary donors.

‎He pointed out the benefits of blood donation to the donor and advocated for more support from relevant authorities and stakeholders to keep the Blood donation center active.

‎”Voluntary Blood Donation is very important because we use it for people who are in need like people who are sick, people who are going in for surgery, people that lost blood in accident. We don’t have substitute for human blood so we still depend on human being to donate and save lives.”

‎”What we do is that we work with our policies and guidelines, there is a National Accepted amount that is charged for the screening of the blood alone, apart from that we don’t collect more than that charge and that charge is accepted by the National Blood Service Agency.”

‎A Blood donor at the event including, Mr. Jude Okojo-Njoku, while urging people to avail themselves to donate blood, explained that he derived joy donating blood to save the lives of people. “My purpose of donating blood is to save lives as well and I urge people to do same so that together we will save lives.”


‎Mr. Okojo-Njoku however urged Government to recognize the efforts of voluntary blood donors by including them in the National Health Policy. Every 14 June is marked as world Blood Donors day, to express gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions, this year’s theme is “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives”.
