YEAC-Nigeria Marks Democracy Day with Call for Justice, Accountability

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has called on citizens and leaders to recommit to the principles of democracy, good governance, and accountability. In a statement issued to mark the day, the organisation described June 12 as a symbolic reminder of Nigeria’s enduring struggle for democratic freedoms, transparency, and justice.

The date commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. “June 12 marks a pivotal moment in our democratic journey, symbolizing the struggle for democracy, freedom, and good governance,” said Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria.

YEAC-Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to promoting civic engagement, transparency, and anti-corruption reforms while urging Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and setbacks. The group particularly criticized the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which it said resulted in the ousting of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly.

Describing the move as a threat to democracy and a violation of the people’s mandate, YEAC-Nigeria called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to lift the emergency declaration and restore democratic governance in the state. “The declaration undermines the democratic process and the will of the people. We urge the President to reverse this decision and reinstate the elected government in Rivers State.”

Beyond the Rivers crisis, YEAC-Nigeria emphasized that corruption remains one of the most significant obstacles to national development and democratic consolidation in Nigeria. The organization called on the federal government to intensify its anti-corruption efforts, and for citizens to demand transparency and accountability from public office holders.

“We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue to hold leaders accountable. Democracy thrives only when citizens actively participate in governance and demand better from those in power,” Dr. Fyneface added. The statement concluded with a message of hope and resolve, calling on all Nigerians to protect democratic institutions, uphold human rights, and work together to build a more just and inclusive society.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us recommit to building a Nigeria where justice, accountability, and the rule of law prevail.”
