Activist Commends NGOs for Championing the Course for Women

Non-government Organisations, NGOs have been lauded in their activities to promote the rights and privileges of women in the society. A woman right activist and coordinator, Centre of Environment, Media and Development Communication, Chief Constance Meju gave the commendation in a media chat in Port Harcourt.

Madam Meju who highlighted the crucial role the NGOs play in advocating change and empowering women to realize their potentials described the NGOs as vehicle of change in the society which have done a lot to uplift the wellbeing of the women.

“They train the people to understand how the rain is beating you, for you to take proper action. Also, the NGOs have stated that the major problem in the country is poverty. There have been efforts to train women to acquire skills and to urge the government to grant women scholarships. Also, they have been going to the villages, community heads for them to see women as part of the society”, she stated.

Madam Meju stated that women groups are not in rivalry with the men in the communities but are calling for the voices of women to be heard and their opinions incorporated into the scheme of things to usher in the desired change.

On the issue of affirmation action, she supported that the female folk should be given the opportunity via legislation to participate more in decision making when it comes to politics as it is done in other climes.

Madam Meju emphasized the role of the media in informing and educating the nation about the plight of the women fo for a radical action to be taken, to achieve a just and egalitarian society.

“It is the media that sends the message across. And it is from the media actually the policy people gather the necessary information for whatever they do, if the media is on any issue they will be forced to react on it.


The media is the vehicle through which this enhancement messages get faster to both the people who need them and the people who do not know about them”, she noted. The woman right activist, encouraged the women in the rural areas to be bold and speak-up whenever their rights are infringed upon.
