A female trader at the Oil Mill market was left devastated after falling victim to a fraudulent scheme involving counterfeit currency. The incident occurred on Monday when three women approached her to purchase bags of garri, paying with fake naira notes totaling ₦300,000.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspects, all women, made the transaction appear genuine, handing over the cash and collecting the goods.
However, suspicion arose shortly after they left the shop when other traders questioned why the buyers would pay such a large amount in physical cash for garri—a commodity usually bought in smaller quantities.

Upon closer inspection, the seller realized that the money was counterfeit, leaving her in deep distress over the significant financial loss. Market officials and other traders expressed sympathy for the victim while condemning the increasing cases of fraud in the area.
Authorities have been alerted, and efforts are underway to track down the suspects. This incident serves as a warning to business owners to remain vigilant, especially when handling large cash transactions.
