Karpin Ranks Super Eagles Above Zambia, Kenya

Russia’s head coach, Valery Karpin, has praised Nigeria’s Super Eagles as a more formidable team compared to Zambia and Kenya, following their exciting 1-1 international friendly match in Moscow on Friday night, as reported by Soccernet. The match took place at the renowned Luzhniki Stadium, attracting a record attendance and marking the first senior international encounter between Russia and Nigeria.

This fixture also concluded Russia’s impressive eight-game winning streak, which included a commanding 5-0 victory over Zambia in March 2025. Karpin, in his post-match comments, acknowledged that Nigeria presented a greater challenge than several other African teams his squad had recently faced, including Kenya and Zambia, whom Russia had played and defeated in late 2023.

Karpin’s remarks regarding the Super Eagles “The African teams are all very athletic, powerful, and strong,” Karpin stated. “Cameroon and Nigeria are significantly superior to Zambia and Kenya. This is further supported by the FIFA rankings. They are not comparable. Nigeria and Cameroon are more intriguing.” “We did not perform well” – Chelle’s comments following the Super Eagles vs. Russia match.

Despite the outcome, the Russian coach expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against a side he evidently respects, highlighting that Nigeria generated few clear opportunities during the match. “Everything was satisfactory, from the pressing to… I cannot recall a single moment, except for the error during the throw-in. Do you remember? Perhaps I simply forgot,” Karpin remarked when asked about the positive aspects of the game.”

They did not pose threats to us, but we created opportunities. Melehin’s chance – following a free kick, Barinov’s – after transitioning from defense. The goal we conceded cannot truly be attributed to Nigeria, there was not even any pressing involved.” Previously, Russia had secured a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in October 2023, before drawing 2-2 with Kenya later that month, a result that initiated their winning streak until Nigeria interrupted their momentum once again.
