Super Eagles Call-up Excites Olakunle

FC Krasnodar defender Olusegun Olakunle has conveyed his profound joy and appreciation following his inaugural call-up to the Super Eagles. In an interview, the 23-year-old forward reflected on his modest beginnings leading to his first international selection, characterizing his invitation as a ‘privilege and honour’.

“Representing the national team is a dream for every player, so to find myself now in the Super Eagles, I consider it a privilege and an honour for me,” stated the former youth international who participated with the Golden Eaglets at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. “It’s not solely due to my abilities or performance, but I am confident that I can improve. I must demonstrate my skills, showcase my quality, and prove to everyone that I am prepared.”

Olakunle, who has previously been involved with the national Under-15 and Under-17 teams, first gained attention during the Under-15 camp in 2017. However, he truly made his mark two years later in the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he emerged as the top scorer and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s qualification for both the continental tournament in Tanzania and the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Brazil.

Although Nigeria was eliminated in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, the young winger’s talent was unmistakable. This exposure paved the way for opportunities in Europe, where he commenced his professional career in Denmark before transitioning to Russia. “Moving to Denmark and making my debut there was a significant privilege and an excellent opportunity,” he remarked.

“I participated in approximately 24 matches, scoring eight goals and providing six assists. It was a remarkable season for me.” He acknowledged his family for their support as he prepared for the challenges of representing the Super Eagles. “When I received the notification, I felt it was premature,” the Kwara State-born Olakunle expressed. “However, my family reassured me, saying, ‘It’s not too early; you simply need to go there and perform your duties as a professional,’ and here I am.
