Rivers State Secretariat in Shambles: Civil Servants Sound Alarm

Secretariat

Civil servants in Rivers State are sounding the alarm over the deplorable conditions at the state Secretariat, where they face numerous challenges that hinder their productivity.

The workers cite the lack of electricity, non-functional elevators, and the absence of running water as major concerns that make their daily tasks physically exhausting. Workers are forced to use torchlights to navigate the dark stairwells up to the 10th floor, which is not only frustrating but also poses safety risks.

The absence of running water and functional elevators has made working conditions unbearable, affecting the overall well-being of the civil servants. The deteriorating infrastructure is taking a toll on the workers’ productivity, making it difficult for them to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

The civil servants are urging the state administrator to urgently address these infrastructural issues, stressing that immediate intervention is necessary to improve working conditions. This plea is not new, as Governor Siminalayi Fubara had previously acknowledged the substandard facilities during a visit to the secretariat complex in 2023.

He promised to address the challenges, including water supply and security, to enhance productivity. Governor Fubara visited the secretariat complex, assessing the state of facilities and promising to improve working conditions.

The governor also called for an investigation into the expenditure of funds disbursed for water supply in the secretariat, indicating a willingness to address the issues. While the governor has made assurances and taken steps to address the concerns, the civil servants have yet to see significant improvements.

With the new minimum wage of N85,000 approved for Rivers State workers, it is hoped that the state government will prioritise the welfare of its employees and take concrete actions to improve working conditions.
