NFF Appoints Italian Coach

The Nigerian Fencing Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Riccardo Bardine, a distinguished Italian fencing coach, to guide the national team at the 2025 African Senior Fencing Championships, set to be hosted in Lagos from June 25 to 29, 2025. This strategic move marks a significant step in elevating Nigeria’s standing in the sport and is part of a newly established four-year partnership with the Italian Fencing Federation, aimed at transforming the landscape of fencing in Nigeria.

Under the terms of this collaboration, the NFF and the Italian Fencing Federation will work together to foster the sport’s development through a comprehensive program of technical assistance, specialized training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. The partnership seeks to enhance the skills of Nigerian athletes, improve coaching standards, and strengthen the overall infrastructure of fencing in the country, positioning Nigeria as a competitive force in African and global fencing.

Riccardo Bardine, widely respected in international fencing circles for his expertise and track record, will arrive in Lagos in early June 2025 to spearhead an intensive two-week training camp. This camp will involve both Nigerian athletes and coaches, focusing on advanced techniques, tactical preparation, and physical conditioning tailored to the demands of the upcoming championships. Bardine’s leadership is expected to instill discipline and elevate the technical proficiency of the national team, preparing them to compete at the highest level on home soil.

The NFF views Bardine’s appointment and the partnership with Italy as critical steps toward achieving long-term success in fencing, with goals of increasing participation, nurturing young talent, and securing medals at regional and international competitions. The training camp and championship preparations are anticipated to galvanize interest in the sport across Nigeria, inspiring a new generation of fencers.
