NPFL Players Have Quality- Eric Chelle

In a refreshing shift from the usual, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s home-based players, emphasizing their potential to compete at the highest level. Speaking to the press after Nigeria’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over West African rivals Ghana in the Unity Cup held in London on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Chelle highlighted his commitment to integrating local talent into the national team setup.

Historically, coaches of Nigeria’s senior national team have faced criticism for prioritizing foreign-based players, often overlooking the wealth of talent in the domestic league. However, Chelle, a Malian tactician, is breaking from tradition by giving home-based players a platform to shine. During the match against Ghana, he included several local players in the squad, a decision that paid dividends in the team’s performance.

“I’ve said before, these [home-based] players have quality,” Chelle stated. “My job is to analyze and make choices. If I get it wrong, I’ll take responsibility, but I believe in giving these players opportunities. They can add something special to the team. Who knows? I might find a player who can score a crucial goal in the final moments against teams like Rwanda, South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Lesotho.”

Chelle’s approach reflects a broader vision of building a balanced squad that draws on talent from both domestic and international pools. His willingness to experiment with local players signals a commitment to fostering inclusivity and maximizing Nigeria’s football potential.

Following the victory over Ghana, the Super Eagles are now preparing to face Jamaica in the Unity Cup final on Saturday, May 31, 2025. Chelle acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Jamaica as “a great team with great players.” Despite the win against Ghana, he stressed the need for improvement, noting that the team requires additional training sessions to refine their performance.

With crucial matches looming in September, including potential clashes against strong African sides, Chelle is focused on creating a cohesive and versatile squad.

“My job is to do what’s best for this team, for Nigeria, for the local players, and for those playing abroad,” he said. “I’m happy to be here with my players, and we’re fully focused on what’s next.”

The Unity Cup victory over Ghana is a promising step for Chelle’s Super Eagles, and his faith in home-based players could mark a turning point for Nigerian football. By giving domestic talent a chance to prove themselves on an international stage, Chelle is not only building a more inclusive team but also inspiring hope among fans and players alike.
