FIDA Marks Children’s Day with Call to Action for Parents

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State branch, has called on parents and guardians to take proactive steps in monitoring and guiding their children to prevent them from engaging in criminal activities that could endanger their future.

This appeal was made during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration held at Community Secondary School, Azuabie, Port Harcourt. The event, themed “Powering Young Voices for a Brighter Future,” was organized by FIDA Rivers and featured educational talks, talent showcases, and competitions. In her address, Chairperson of FIDA Rivers, Tamunoibuemi Life-JimGeorge, emphasized the vital role of parental involvement in shaping children’s lives.

“My advice to parents is to always keep a watchful eye on their children. Monitor them closely and address any emerging negative behavior early. These traits, if not tamed, could affect their future.” She warned students to avoid cultism, drug abuse, and other criminal tendencies.

“We are begging our children to stay away from cultism. Anyone who promises you wealth through illegal means is leading you astray. Yahoo activities, sexual assault, gangsterism—these are all against God, against the law, and will only destroy your future. Every offender will be punished according to the law,” she cautioned.

Guest speaker, Pastor Excellence Maduka delivered a powerful talk on the dangers of cultism and drug abuse. He outlined how peer pressure and false promises often lure youths into destructive paths and emphasized the long-term consequences of such choices. The session was interactive, with students actively participating and asking questions.

The celebration featured a variety of performances from both junior and senior secondary school students, including dance, music, and spoken word poetry, which highlighted the talents of the students. All participating students received gift items.

One of the highlights of the event was the Spelling Bee competition. It was held in two segments: one for junior secondary students and another for senior students, with a total of 15 participants. Two winners emerged from each category, receiving exotic school bags presented by FIDA Rivers Chairperson.
