Critics Question Iheanacho’s Super Eagles Comeback

Kelechi Iheanacho’s recall to the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Unity Cup and a friendly against Russia has ignited a flurry of reactions among Nigerian football fans, with a significant portion expressing criticism over the decision. The 28-year-old forward’s inclusion comes after a challenging loan spell at English Championship side Middlesbrough, a move that followed his transfer to Sevilla.

Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough on loan from Spanish club Sevilla until the end of the current season, after only making 11 appearances and scoring three goals (all in the Copa del Rey) for the La Liga outfit. His time at Middlesbrough, spanning eight league appearances, has seen him net just one goal, contributing to a generally underwhelming period for the once-prolific striker. This dip in club form has fueled much of the public’s apprehension regarding his national team comeback.

Online platforms, including social media, reflect the divided sentiment. Many fans question the timing and merit of his recall, given his recent struggles to find the back of the net. “While Iheanacho has undeniable talent, his recent form at Middlesbrough hardly justifies a Super Eagles call-up at this critical juncture,” one fan posted on a popular Nigerian football forum. “We need players who are consistently performing at their clubs, not those struggling for goals.”

Conversely, some voices advocate for patience and belief in the forward’s potential. “He’s a proven goalscorer for the Super Eagles in the past,” argued another supporter. “Sometimes, a change of scenery and the national team environment can reignite a player’s confidence. This could be the chance he needs.”

The Super Eagles coaching staff, who had not yet publicly commented on the specifics of Iheanacho’s current club form in relation to his recall, will undoubtedly be hoping that his return to the national fold can spark a resurgence. His performance in the Unity Cup and against Russia will be under intense scrutiny, as fans and pundits alike look to see if the “Senior Man Kelz” of old can re-emerge and justify the faith placed in him.
