Stakeholders Urge Increased Funding for Nigerian Museums‎

As the world commemorates the role of Museums in preserving culture, artifacts and history, Government at all levels have been called upon to provide the necessary legal and financial framework needed to place museums in Nigeria on equal footing with their counterparts around the world.

‎This call was made by traditional leaders and other Stakeholders who gathered at the National Museum in Port Harcourt to witness this year’s commemoration. They all agreed that the state of Museums in the country was below standard despite the intervention made to uplift the facilities across the country.

‎Speaking during the program, The Rivers State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress Mr Alex Agwanwor who was represented by his Vice Mr. Azubuike Nkasiobi said that government should move beyond making promises and implement workable policies that would ensure Museums around the country become place for education about Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

‎The Okaan Ama of Atagba Kingdom, His Highness Sir Benson Egwenre, while applauding the role of Museums in preserving cultural heritage, called on well meaning individuals to support museums with philanthropic gestures.



‎In his remarks, the Curator of National Museums Port Harcourt Mr. Victor Otuka
‎said that Museum Day celebration is a wake up call for individuals and stakeholders to appreciate the relevance of museums to the society. He called for support for the improvement of Museum’s infrastructure.

‎The theme for this year’s International Museum’s Day is ” The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities” The highlight of this year’s observance includes cultural dances, talk show, quiz and folklore presentations by select schools.
