Rights Advocate Commends Police as Child with Special Need Reunites with Mother

Mr. Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has lauded Mr. Lawrence Ike, the Divisional Police Officer of the Azikiwe Police Division, for successfully returning a young girl with disabilities to her mother.

The roughly seven-year-old girl, who is both deaf and mute, was found on Azikiwe Street in Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt, on Monday, May 12, 2025, by Wiro, who took her to the police station for her safety.

In a interview with our correspondent, Wiro, an advocate for rights, confirmed that the girl has been safely reunited with her mother.

The rights advocate emphasized the importance of showing compassion and care towards individuals with disabilities, as they share the same humanity as everyone else.

He also recognized the contributions of rights organizations, the leadership of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State, and other group members for their concern and for condemning the stigmatization faced by the young girl from some mothers who visited the station.
