RSUTH Launches Blood Component Therapy Machine for Effective Blood Transfusion Services

In order to provide effective blood transfusion services, the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, (RSUTH) has launched a blood component therapy machine to assist patients in need.

The Chief Medical Director RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor made this known in Port Harcourt, during a capacity Building Workshop for Healthcare Professionals, organized by the hospital, in collaboration with the National Blood Service Agency with the theme ‘Blood Component Therapy Services: The Right Blood for the Right Patients’.

“We have to invest and by the grace of God we are able to provide component blood therapy for all those who will need it in Nigeria and Sub Saharan Africa and we have two different facilities already in place.” Also, the Vice President Nigeria Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Professor Kaladada Korubo who spoke to newsmen at the event explained the importance of the blood component machine.

“We have the two machines, one machine can collect only the part of the blood that is needed from the donor so if the person is donating only the plasma, you collect only the plasma and the other machine is the cold centrifuge machine, when whole blood is donated the machine divides into different parts”.

On his part, the Director General, National Blood Service Agency of Nigeria, Professor Saleh Yuguda who commended RSUTH for ensuring the safety and quality of blood and blood products used in the country, seek more collective efforts and improve blood transfusion services.
