EFCC Releases VeryDarkMan

Nigeria’s vibrant social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The announcement came on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from prominent activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who shared the news via his X handle.

Sowore’s post read: “Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of all, @thatverydarkman has been released from unjust detention at the @officialEFCC. He is with his ebullient lawyer, @adeyanjudeji.” The tweet sparked waves of relief and celebration among VeryDarkMan’s supporters, who have followed his journey as a vocal critic of corruption and social injustices in Nigeria.

Recall that VeryDarkMan was arrested by the EFCC. Details surrounding VeryDarkMan’s detention by the EFCC remain sparse, but Sowore’s description of it as “unjust” suggests that the arrest may have been contentious. The EFCC, Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, is tasked with investigating financial crimes, but its actions have sometimes been criticised as selective or politically motivated. While the specific reasons for Otse’s detention are unclear, his release highlights the power of collective advocacy and legal support in challenging such detentions.

The mention of VeryDarkMan’s lawyer, Adeyanju Deji, in Sowore’s tweet underscores the role of legal representation in securing his freedom. Deji, a well-known human rights lawyer, has a track record of defending activists and public figures facing legal battles in Nigeria. His involvement likely played a crucial role in navigating the complexities of the case.

Sowore’s acknowledgement of the “unrelenting efforts of all” points to the broader community that rallied behind VeryDarkMan. From social media campaigns to public outcry, the pressure exerted by supporters likely contributed to his release. This moment serves as a reminder of the influence that grassroots movements and online activism can wield in holding authorities accountable.

The synergy between Sowore, a veteran activist with a long history of challenging systemic issues, and VeryDarkMan, a newer but equally impactful voice, highlights the evolving nature of activism in Nigeria. While Sowore has been a fixture in the fight for justice since the days of military rule, VeryDarkMan represents a generation that leverages digital platforms to amplify their message.

VeryDarkMan’s release is more than just a personal victory; it’s a beacon of hope for activists across Nigeria who face harassment, intimidation, or detention for speaking truth to power. The incident underscores the challenges of operating in a space where free speech can come at a high cost, yet it also showcases the resilience of those who refuse to be silenced.

As Nigeria grapples with economic hardships, corruption, and governance issues, figures like VeryDarkMan play a critical role in keeping the public informed and engaged. However, their work is not without risks. The EFCC’s involvement in this case raises questions about the boundaries of activism and the extent to which authorities may seek to curb dissenting voices.
