NFF Takes Firm Stance Against Match Fixing

NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has today issued a strong declaration against match manipulation, signaling a zero-tolerance policy aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Nigerian football. In a decisive move communicated through official channels, the NFF stated that any referee found to be complicit in match-fixing activities would face a stringent penalty of a ten-year ban from all football-related activities, alongside the possibility of legal prosecution.

This firm stance underscores the NFF’s commitment to upholding the principles of fair play and ensuring the credibility of all levels of Nigerian football, including the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), the Nigeria National League (NNL), and the Nationwide League One (NLO), all currently in their 2025 seasons.

The NFF emphasized that this measure is a direct response to concerns regarding the potential for and impact of match manipulation on the sport’s reputation and the trust of fans and stakeholders. By implementing such severe penalties, the federation aims to deter any individuals within the officiating ranks from engaging in unethical practices that could undermine the fairness and outcome of matches.

The warning was formally conveyed in a letter from the NFF Refereeing Development Committee, addressed to all concerned referees on April 23, 2025. The letter, signed by Mohammed Ameenu, Secretary of the Committee, explicitly instructs referees to uphold equity, fairness, and justice in their officiating duties. It highlights the critical stage of the NPFL, NNL, and NWFL seasons, as well as the commencement of the NLO season, noting the potential pressure on referees from teams and their agents.

The letter also reveals the establishment of a powerful monitoring committee by the NFF President and General Secretary, tasked with independently reporting any observations that deviate from the Laws of the Game or bring refereeing and the game into disrepute. Furthermore, the communication emphasizes that many matches will be streamed live, making performances visible and subject to evaluation. The NFF Refereeing Development Committee’s letter explicitly warns that any referee found acting contrary to the principles of fairness will face a minimum ten-year ban and potential handover to State Security Services for further investigation and prosecution, underscoring the severity with which the NFF is addressing the issue of match manipulation.

The NFF’s announcement has been widely disseminated through their official website and social media platforms, carrying the hashtags #NFF, #FairPlay, #NPFL25, #NoToMatchFixing, #NWFL25, #NNL25, #NLO25, and #NigerianFootball, ensuring broad reach within the footballing community and the wider public.

This development is expected to be welcomed by football enthusiasts and stakeholders who have long advocated for stricter measures to combat match manipulation and ensure the sanctity of the game in Nigeria. The NFF’s resolute position sends a strong signal that it is committed to maintaining a level playing field and preserving the future of Nigerian football.
