Burnley And Leeds Return to Premier League

On Saturday, Burnley secured a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United at Turf Moor, clinching automatic promotion to the Premier League for the 2025-26 season. This result also confirmed promotion for Championship leaders Leeds United, who had earlier demolished Stoke City 6-0 at Elland Road. With both teams level on 94 points and only two matches left, Leeds and Burnley have secured the top two spots, leaving Sheffield United, on 86 points, to fight for promotion through the playoffs.

Leeds United’s emphatic win was powered by a first-half onslaught, with Joel Piroe netting a hat-trick within the opening 20 minutes and adding a fourth goal before the break. The hosts led 5-0 at halftime, thrilling the passionate Elland Road crowd. This victory propelled Leeds to the top of the Championship table, but their promotion hinged on Burnley avoiding defeat against third-placed Sheffield United. Burnley delivered, with Josh Brownhill scoring twice—once to open the tally and again after Tom Cannon’s equaliser for Sheffield United—sealing the win and promotion for both clubs.

Burnley, managed by Scott Parker, return to the Premier League after relegation in the 2023-24 season, while Leeds make their comeback following a single year in the Championship after three seasons in the top flight from 2020 to 2023. Sheffield United, despite the loss, remain in contention for promotion via the playoffs, where they will compete for the final Premier League spot.

Elsewhere in the Championship, playoff and relegation battles intensified. Sunderland, despite a 1-0 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, secured a playoff berth with their fourth-place standing. Blackburn’s victory kept their faint top-six hopes alive, with 62 points. Bristol City, in fifth, suffered a 3-1 defeat at Luton Town, who are battling relegation, but held onto their position with 67 points. Coventry City, with 66 points, also faltered, losing 3-1 to bottom-placed Plymouth Argyle. Seventh-placed Middlesbrough, on 63 points, missed a chance to close the gap, falling 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday despite an early lead. Millwall, also on 63 points, remain in the playoff hunt alongside Blackburn.

With two games left, the race for the final playoff spots is tight, with Bristol City, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Millwall, and Blackburn all vying to join Sunderland and potentially Sheffield United in the postseason. Meanwhile, at the bottom, teams like Luton and Plymouth are scrapping to avoid the drop, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the Championship season.
