The United Nations has designated April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day, an international day of observance to raise awareness about the importance of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human life, particularly addressing global challenges and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Creativity and Innovation Day, the correspondent takes a look at the significance of the day. International Day of Creativity and Innovation, celebrated on April 21 every year, is to encourage people all over the world to be creative.
This year’s theme, “Step out and innovate”, encourages one to think outside the box to change the world for the better. A senior professor from the University of Port Harcourt, Mr. Kalu Nwosu, explained that the day should serve as a reminder for government, universities and technological firms to unite their efforts in bringing about groundbreaking educational practices which are vital in producing creative solutions to enhance educational access and equity.

In Nigeria, one of the sectors that has experienced a surge in creativity and innovation is the film industry. The Chairman Actors Guild of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Mr Ken Osunwa, says filmmakers now incorporate new techniques, formats and narrative structures to engage their audience from visual reality productions to artificial intelligence tools.

Unarguably, those in the art industry cannot do without creativity and innovation. Mr Thankgod Nwodike is one of them. He said, “My job has allowed me to explore new creative ideas and experiment with materials “.
He encourages citizens to keep up with the moving trends and techniques.
The founder of Rivers International Film Festival, Kate Ezigbo, said, “sharing ideas among creators will lead to more innovation and creativity, which is the essence of the day”. In the words of a British playwright, George Shaw, ” Imagination is the beginning of creation”.
It is therefore time to imagine solutions that address global challenges and creatively work towards achieving them through innovation.
