Rivers United Secure Narrow Victory Over Sunshine Stars in NPFL

Rivers United Football Club today recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Sunshine Stars in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 34 encounter. The decisive goal came late in the second half courtesy of substitute Abba Suleiman, securing all three points for the home side at their Port Harcourt fortress.

The match, played earlier today, saw a return to the starting lineup for goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya, while Boluwaji David featured in midfield, Philip Odubia operated on the wing, and Chijioke Mbaoma led the attacking line. This lineup, as confirmed prior to the match by the club, was without the services of Taofeek Otaniyi, who was suspended due to accumulated yellow cards.

The first half concluded without any goals, despite moments of attacking intent from both sides. Rivers United’s Philip Odubia had an early opportunity, with his shot narrowly missing the target in the 7th minute.

Goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya was also called into action, making a crucial save in the 12th minute to keep the score level. Boluwaji David received a yellow card in the 35th minute, adding a note of caution to the home team’s play.

Following the restart, Rivers United Technical Manager Finidi George made a double substitution in the 46th minute, bringing on David Benjamin and Obande Williams in place of Friday Ubong and Nnaji Emmanuel.

Further changes saw Taiwo AbdulRafiu and Abba Suleiman replace Emmanuel Ampiah and Philip Odubia in the 60th minute, and Samson Obi come on for Chijioke Mbaoma in the 71st minute as Rivers United sought to break the deadlock.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 84th minute when Abba Suleiman found the back of the net, sending the home supporters into jubilation. Despite three minutes of added time, Sunshine Stars were unable to find an equalizer, and Rivers United held on to secure the 1-0 victory.

This result marks a positive outcome for Rivers United following the pre-match celebrations held in honor of their Technical Manager, Finidi George, whose birthday was acknowledged by the players and staff.

The club will be looking to build on this victory as the NPFL season progresses. Further details regarding the match and league standings will be released by the NPFL organizers in due course.
