Tackling Under-Five Mortality: The Role of Childhood Immunization

Under-five mortality remains a major public health concern in Nigeria, with Rivers State also facing its share of the challenge. Many children still die from preventable diseases before their fifth birthday, often due to a lack of timely and complete immunization.

Experts have identified routine childhood immunization as one of the most effective ways to reduce these avoidable deaths. Yet, gaps in awareness, access, and misinformation continue to stand in the way.

Across both rural and urban areas in Rivers State, many parents—especially in riverine and hard-to-reach communities—struggle to access basic healthcare services. Some are unaware of the importance of immunization, while others face long distances to the nearest health centre.

Despite free vaccines being available in government facilities, the level of uptake is still below expected levels in some parts of the state.

Why Immunization Is Important

Childhood vaccines protect against deadly diseases such as measles, tuberculosis, diphtheria, hepatitis B, polio, and whooping cough. These diseases continue to claim young lives that could easily be saved through timely immunization.

Immunization not only protects the child who receives it but also helps protect others in the community by reducing the spread of infections.

Healthcare workers and government agencies have continued to advocate for stronger community participation. Traditional rulers, local leaders, faith-based organizations, and market associations are all being encouraged to support awareness campaigns and encourage parents to complete their children’s immunization schedules.
The government, through the Ministry of Health and its partners, has also increased outreach efforts in remote areas to ensure more children are reached.

Reducing under-five deaths requires a collective approach. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of free routine immunization services available at all government primary healthcare centers across Rivers State.
Community leaders are urged to continue spreading accurate information and mobilizing support. Together, we can give more children in Rivers State a healthy start in life.

Every vaccine taken is a step toward saving a life—and every child deserves that chance.
