Transforming Rivers State: Julius Berger’s Impact on Roads and Bridges

Infrastructure development in Rivers State is accelerating, with major road and bridge projects transforming access, mobility, and economic opportunities across the region. At the heart of this transformation is Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, a construction giant spearheading projects that enhance transportation networks and urban connectivity.

Expanding Road Networks for Economic Growth

From the ambitious Port Harcourt Ring Road to the Emohua-Abalama/Tema Junction Road and the Ahoada-Omoku-Ndoni Road, Julius Berger’s ongoing projects are reshaping the state’s landscape. The 15.24 km dualization of the Emohua-Abalama/Tema Junction Road, located just outside Port Harcourt, is progressing steadily. Phase 1 has been completed, while Phase 2, launched in November 2024 despite security challenges, is well underway. Project Manager Finn Drosdowski highlighted that the road will include drainage systems and solar-powered street lighting, ensuring safer, more efficient travel for road users.

Meanwhile, the Ahoada-Omoku-Ndoni Road Extension, a 25.4 km dualization project, is nearing 75% completion. Connecting Ahoada East to Omoku, the project involves extensive drainage installations in township areas. Julius Berger has also facilitated a smooth relocation process, compensating affected residents for their properties.

Strengthening Riverine Connectivity

Beyond urban road expansions, Julius Berger has embarked on the reconstruction of the Buguma-Abalama-Tema-Degema-Abonnema Road, a 19.6 km route crucial for linking riverine communities. Launched in December 2024, this project features drainage systems and the rehabilitation of seven bridges, significantly improving transportation for thousands of residents. Engineers have prioritized sustainability by reusing milled road material as a sub-base while also engaging local suppliers and creating employment opportunities for community members.

The Port Harcourt Ring Road: A Landmark Project

At the center of these infrastructural advancements is the Port Harcourt Ring Road, a 50.15 km dual carriageway designed to enhance intra-city mobility by connecting six Local Government Areas: Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche, Eleme, and Oyigbo. Awarded in 2023, the project includes the construction of five flyovers and a river-crossing bridge. Progress is evident at key flyover sites—Ozuoba, Rumumasi, Aluu, Kala, and Elelenwo—where crews are actively working on drainage systems, road dividers, and final road surfacing.

Commitment to Community and Sustainable Development

Julius Berger remains committed to completing the Ring Road project on schedule, integrating community engagement and compensation processes to minimize disruptions. The company has also provided temporary access roads and continues to support local employment through initiatives like the Young Engineers Program, which trains future construction professionals.

Project Manager Drosdowski emphasized the broader significance of these efforts: “We are contributing to the long-term growth of Rivers State through infrastructure that will transform communities. Every project we undertake is part of a larger effort to support economic and social development. At the end of the day, the roads and bridges we build will speak for our commitment to progress.”

As these projects progress, Julius Berger’s work is not only reshaping Rivers State’s physical landscape but also fostering a stronger foundation for economic expansion and an improved quality of life for residents.
