WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY: Experts Emphasize Need for Inclusion and Support

As the world marks World Autism Awareness Day, experts in the field of autism therapy are calling for greater awareness, acceptance, and inclusion of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Mrs. Chinyere, a therapist from Urmost Care and Therapy Service Limited in Port Harcourt, emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting individuals with autism. “Autism is a neurological disorder that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior,” she explained Early detection is crucial, as it can significantly impact the effectiveness of interventions and therapies.”

Mrs. Chinyere highlighted the need for parents and caregivers to be aware of the signs of autism, which can include delayed speech development, social withdrawal, and repetitive behaviors. By noticing these signs early, parents can seek professional help, and we can work together to support the child’s development.

Miss Success Joshua, a special needs therapist, spoke about the impact of autism on parents and caregivers. “Caring for a child with autism can be challenging and emotionally draining,” she acknowledged. She added that sometimes, parents and caregivers can fall into depression and need therapy themselves from caring for people with autism.
