NAFDAC Cracks Down on Counterfeit Rice in Port Harcourt, Seizes 120 Bags

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its crackdown on counterfeit food products, seizing 120 bags of fake rice across three major markets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a joint operation with the producers of Big Bull Rice, NAFDAC officials raided over ten shops in Woji, Mile 3, and Mile 1 markets, uncovering a large-scale distribution network involved in rebagging and selling counterfeit rice under various popular brands.

One of the major breakthroughs in the raid was the discovery of a distribution hub located in the YKC axis of Woji Market. The shop, stocked with empty counterfeit bags labeled Big Bull Rice, Cap Rice, Stallion Rice, Tomato Rice, and Mama Pride, was also equipped with sewing machines, sealing machines, a stove, and thread—tools used to repackage substandard rice to deceive unsuspecting buyers.

NAFDAC officials apprehended a salesgirl, identified as Ogechi Okafor, who was present at the scene. Her role in the counterfeit operation is currently under investigation.

Speaking on the operation, NAFDAC’s Rivers State Coordinator, Emmanuel Onogwu, cautioned residents to be vigilant when purchasing rice, as many of the rebagged products come from unverified sources and could contain harmful chemicals used to enhance their appearance.

Onogwu advised consumers to look out for distinguishing features of authentic Big Bull Rice, including a unique shiny ribbon across the threaded top, superior bag quality, and a verified brand logo.

The confiscated counterfeit rice has been transported to the NAFDAC Zonal Office for further investigation. Authorities are working to trace the origins of the rebagged rice and hold those involved accountable.

NAFDAC urges the public to report any suspicious rice sales and remain cautious to avoid falling victim to substandard and potentially unsafe food products.
