Treat Women with Dignity, Respect – King Philip Obele

By Tina Amanda

The King of Eleme Land, King Dr. Philip Osaro Obele, has called for the fair and dignified treatment of women, urging men to respect the rights enshrined in the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law.

King Obele made this appeal during an advocacy visit by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers State to Eleme traditional rulers and women.

The visit aimed to raise awareness about harmful traditional practices, the VAPP Law, and other legal protections for women in Rivers State.

The monarch emphasized the importance of self-control in relationships to prevent conflicts that could lead to legal consequences.

“This sensitization was long overdue. Today, we have been enlightened about the laws guiding gender relations in Rivers State. It has opened our eyes to many things we previously did not know,” he said.

He added that the Eleme Royal Council does not discriminate against women but rather accords them respect and value.

King Obele cautioned men to be mindful of their behavior to avoid falling victim to the law.

“These laws are there to protect both men and women, including children. Men should control themselves and not allow anger to push them into actions that could be disastrous.”

He expressed gratitude to FIDA for the sensitization campaign, stating that many rural dwellers are unaware of these laws.

“The people of Eleme appreciate this initiative. This awareness will help reduce abuses and harmful practices against each other.”

Speaking at the event, FIDA Rivers State Chairperson, Emi Life-George, explained that the VAPP Law criminalizes cultural and traditional practices that infringe on people’s rights.

“Under the VAPP Law, everyone must be treated with dignity. Violating anyone’s rights—whether a man or a woman has serious legal consequences. Some actions people consider minor can attract jail terms under the law.”

According to her, offenses under the VAPP Law, such as; forcibly evicting a woman from her matrimonial home, traumatizing widows other harmful cultural practices that violate human rights attract punishment in the VAPP Law.

FIDA’s advocacy continues across communities in Rivers State to ensure better awareness and enforcement of the VAPP Law, protecting vulnerable groups from abuse and discrimination.
