Power Crisis Hits Rivers and Bayelsa as Vandals Sabotage Key Electrical Towers

A widespread power outage has struck Rivers and Bayelsa states, plunging communities into darkness and disrupting normal life. The crisis, which started on March 12, 2025, stems from the malicious destruction of vital electrical infrastructure, leaving residents and businesses struggling to cope.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has identified the culprits as vandals who targeted four critical structures—T171 to T174 — collapsed due to vandalism—along the Owerri-Ahoada 132kV Double Circuit. This essential power corridor channels electricity from generation stations to distribution networks across Nigeria’s southern region, making its disruption a significant blow to the area’s energy supply.

Ndidi Mbah, a spokesperson for TCN, addressed the situation, stating, “The loss of these towers has cut off electricity to Rivers and Bayelsa states entirely. Our technical crews are already on the ground, evaluating the damage and beginning the repair process, but the severity of the sabotage means it won’t be a quick fix.” While efforts are underway, no specific timeline for restoring power has been announced, leaving many in uncertainty.

The consequences of this blackout ripple across multiple sectors. In healthcare facilities, backup generators are now the lifeline for critical operations, while boarding schools face difficulties managing nighttime without reliable electricity. The economic toll is equally stark, with small manufacturing businesses in the area being impacted adversely.

Local residents and business owners have expressed their frustration over the sudden outage. Mrs. Adaobi, who runs a small shop in Ahoada, lamented, “This has been disastrous for me. I’ve lost thousands of naira in perishable stock, and my regular customers are turning to other options. We desperately need the power back.” It bears mentioning that two transmission poles in Borikiri also collapsed, the cause of which is yet to be ascertained.

This incident is not an isolated event but part of a troubling trend in Nigeria. The deliberate targeting of transmission towers has repeatedly disrupted power supplies, costing the nation dearly in economic and social terms. While TCN seized this moment to call for stronger action, and urged government bodies and security forces to prioritize safeguarding such critical assets.

It is worth noting that the company has dispatched the General Manager of the Port Harcourt Region, Engr. Emmanuel Apka, and a team of engineers to assess the extent of the damage.
