Kira, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State – February 27, 2025– In a move that underscores his administration’s commitment to educational advancement and environmental stewardship, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has authorized the transfer of the Rivers State University (RSU) campus in Kira to the Federal Government. This pivotal decision paves the way for the immediate commencement of operations at the newly established Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET).
The landmark release of the RSU campus follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the FUET establishment bill into law on February 3, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the region’s educational landscape. Governor Fubara, accompanied by Professor Nlerum Okogbule, Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, conducted a thorough on-site inspection of the Kira campus on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
During the inspection, Governor Fubara revealed that the state government’s decision to release the facility was directly prompted by a formal request from the National Security Adviser, emphasizing the urgency and national importance of the federal university’s establishment.
“We have conducted a comprehensive assessment of the facilities here in Kira, which, as we know, are the property of Rivers State University,” Governor Fubara stated. “While we had received detailed written information, a physical inspection was crucial to ensure the campus’s suitability for the university’s immediate take-off. What we have witnessed today confirms that this is indeed a well-planned and highly appropriate location.”
Governor Fubara clarified that the Kira campus falls under the jurisdiction of Rivers State University, granting the Rivers State Government the sole authority to facilitate its release. He assured President Tinubu, whose goodwill was instrumental in the university’s establishment, and the National Security Adviser that the facility would be promptly transferred to enable the federal university to commence operations without delay.
Highlighting the strategic importance of FUET, Governor Fubara emphasized its potential to drive development and expand educational opportunities, particularly for the Ogoni community, in addressing pressing environmental challenges. “This university will serve as a critical platform for research and study, particularly in addressing the environmental complexities that affect this region,” he noted.
Governor Fubara expressed his profound satisfaction in supporting the establishment of FUET, describing it as a commendable initiative and a source of pride that it is taking off during his tenure as the governor of the state. This strategic release of the RSU campus stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit between the state and federal governments, aimed at fostering educational growth and sustainable development in the region.
