Port Harcourt Chef’s Birthday Kindness Inspires Community

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Esther John Oblisie, a renowned chef based in Port Harcourt, marked her recent birthday by giving back to those who serve the public daily. Through her initiative, SABI—a movement that unites people through acts of kindness—Oblisie prepared and delivered meals to traffic wardens dedicated to maintaining road safety and easing congestion in the bustling city.

SABI, derived from the pidgin term meaning “to know,” emphasizes the profound impact of small acts of love, such as sharing a meal or offering a helping hand. Oblisie’s gesture aimed to acknowledge the often-overlooked efforts of traffic wardens who navigate the challenges of the city’s roads to ensure smoother commutes for all.

Engaging with the officers during her deliveries, Oblisie inquired about their daily experiences on the streets. Many described their roles as both hectic and rewarding. One officer shared, “It is very difficult to control motorists at times, especially taxi drivers, but we keep doing our best to keep all things in order.” Another added, “We also get encouragement from other drivers who notice our efforts to keep traffic in order.”

The officers expressed deep appreciation for Oblisie’s thoughtful gesture, noting that such recognition boosts morale and fosters a sense of community. They encouraged her to continue her benevolent efforts, highlighting that her actions could inspire young women to emulate her, promote good conduct, and contribute to building a better society.

Reflecting on her mission, Oblisie stated, “My ambition is to grow even better in my line of business and create impact for generations to come.” Over the past six years, she has successfully established a mini bukka—a local eatery—earning a loyal customer base and a reputation for culinary excellence.

Oblisie’s birthday initiative not only nourished those who serve but also served as a poignant reminder of the power of kindness in uniting communities and inspiring positive change.
