The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspected member of an ATM debit card swapping syndicate, marking a significant breakthrough in its fight against financial fraud.
The suspect, identified as Blessing Daberechi Oleru, a 35-year-old resident of OMPADEC Road, Igwuruta Town, Port Harcourt, was apprehended following a complaint by an anonymous victim.
According to police reports, the victim attempted to withdraw cash from an ATM at the Bank Garrison area of Port Harcourt on November 26, 2024, when the machine malfunctioned.

Oleru, who was nearby, posed as a helpful customer but allegedly swapped the victim’s ATM card without his knowledge.

Shortly after leaving the ATM, the victim received debit alerts totaling ₦523,600, prompting him to report the incident to the Olu-Obasanjo Police Station.
Following intelligence gathering and a coordinated operation, police operatives arrested Oleru on February 5, 2025.
During interrogation, she confessed to the crime, and a Moniepoint POS machine was recovered from her possession.
The police have launched further investigations to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
This arrest underscores the Rivers State Police Command’s commitment to combating financial crimes and ensuring the safety of citizens, said SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the Police Public Relations Officer.
The public is urged to remain vigilant when using ATMs and to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
