The Association of Farmers and Food Processors in Rivers State has urged the government and corporate organizations to intensify support for farmers in order to tackle food scarcity and the rising cost of commodities.
President of the association, Chisom Dike, made this appeal during an interview in Port Harcourt, emphasizing the need to enhance food availability for residents of the state.
He highlighted the aging population in the agricultural sector, stressing the necessity for young people to engage in farming to boost food production and processing across Rivers State.
“We don’t have enough farmers in Rivers State, and most of the farmers are elderly. This is a challenge because we are not producing enough food. We need more young people, both male and female, to invest in farming as it is also a lucrative business,” Dike stated.
The association also called on the government and relevant agencies to address the challenges posed by flooding, which has led to significant losses over the years.
“When these floods occur, we lose a lot of topsoil, which is essential for planting. We also lose livestock, and our animals are exposed to infections due to the floods.”
Dike commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his commitment to the agricultural sector and the recent commissioning of a Board of Directors to oversee planned projects.

“We appreciate His Excellency for his interest in agriculture. We appeal to the Ministry of Agriculture and corporate bodies to promote farming and food processing. Food is a basic need, and increasing local production will help reduce crime.”
He urged the state government to engage directly with farmers to understand their challenges. Stressing the importance of equipping Local Government Areas to support farmers, given that most agricultural activities take place in rural communities.
According to him, reducing food prices across the state would contribute significantly to lowering crime rates by improving economic stability.
The call from Rivers State farmers underscores the urgent need for sustainable agricultural policies to ensure food security and economic growth in the region.
