The highly anticipated match between Akwa United and Rivers United in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) lived up to its billing, with the two teams engaging in a fiercely contested 1-1 draw at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Wednesday.
The outcome of the match was a testament to the ongoing struggles of both teams in the league. Akwa United, currently sitting two places above the bottom of the table, is desperate to turn their season around and avoid relegation. Rivers United, on the other hand, entered the match with optimism, following a strong performance despite a recent narrow loss to Enyimba.
Rivers United’s head coach, Finidi George, had expressed confidence in his team’s ability to secure a positive result against Akwa United. However, the match proved to be a challenging encounter, with both teams displaying moments of skill and determination throughout the game.
The visitors, Rivers United, drew first blood, with Paschal Onyekachi opening the scoring in the 9th minute. Despite creating more opportunities, neither side could find the back of the net after that early opener, leaving the score 1-0 in favor of Rivers United at halftime.
The second half saw a renewed sense of intensity, and Akwa United responded quickly, equalizing just seven minutes after the restart. The match concluded with both teams sharing the points, leaving Rivers United in third place and Akwa United struggling to avoid relegation.
The draw was a fair reflection of the match, as both teams had their moments of dominance and created scoring opportunities. However, neither side could capitalize on their chances, ultimately settling for a share of the spoils. The result leaves Akwa United with a daunting task ahead, as they seek to climb out of the relegation zone and secure their spot in the NPFL for next season.
Technical Manager Finidi George was left with a mix of emotions after his side, Rivers United, secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Akwa United at the Nest of Champions. On one hand, George was pleased that his team was able to come away with a point, especially considering they played over 40 minutes with a man disadvantage.
The team’s performance was solid, and they showed great resilience and determination to grind out a result. However, on the other hand, George was disappointed that his team was unable to hold on to their lead and secure all three points. Ubong Friday’s well-taken strike from a free kick had given Rivers United the lead, and it seemed like they were on course for a win.
But the 54th-minute sending off of Abba Suleiman changed the dynamics of the game, and Akwa United was able to capitalize on the numerical advantage. Abson Mare’s second-half header ultimately proved to be the equalizer, and Rivers United was forced to settle for a draw.
Despite the disappointment, George was satisfied with the work rate and commitment of his players, who kept going until the end. He acknowledged that the sending off had affected their display, but he was proud of the way his team responded to the challenge and adapted to the situation.
Overall, the draw was a fair result, considering the circumstances of the game. George will be looking to build on this performance and secure more positive results in the coming matches.
“It was a good game,” Finidi said. “I thought we would have won it, but it didn’t happen. I think the players did well; just a slight mistake defensively, and they got that equalizer. But I think in the second half, we had another opportunity where I thought the striker could have shot better. It didn’t happen, so at the end of the day, playing with one man less, we could manage the game and we got that one point. I am quite happy, even though I wanted the three points. Looking at the way everything unfolded, I think it’s a well-deserved point.”
