Tension flared in Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the alleged extrajudicial killing of a young man, Bright Chikuma Egbule, by a police officer attached to the Omagwa Division of the Rivers State Police Command.
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, triggered immediate outrage among residents. In protest, community members mobilized and attempted to take the victim’s body to the Omagwa Divisional Police Station, intending to deposit it there as a demonstration of their anger. However, officers on duty repelled them, preventing them from gaining entry.
Determined to make their grievances known, the protesters blocked the busy highway leading to Port Harcourt International Airport and Owerri in Imo State, causing a major gridlock. The situation sparked concerns that the demonstration could escalate into violence.
The Rivers State Police Command has since confirmed the incident, stating that the officer responsible for the fatal shooting has been arrested. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko assured the public that normalcy has been restored, with security forces on the ground to prevent further unrest.
“The command is aware, and the CP is on top of the situation. Normalcy has now been restored, and adequate security is present to prevent any breach of peace,” she stated. She further confirmed that the deceased’s body had been deposited in the morgue and that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting was underway.
