Farmers to organise town hall meeting with Fubara on food security

By Mark Lenu

Farmers in Rivers State under the auspices of the Commercial Farmers and Agro-Allied Producers of Nigeria says it would write Governor Siminalayi Fubara, inviting him to a townhall meeting.

The farming group said the essence of the meeting is to have the governor publicly tell Rivers people hìs plans and goals for the farming community.

According to the National President of the Commercial Farmers and Agro-Allied Producers of Nigeria, Amadi Fidelis, the meeting is aimed at providing food security in the state.

Amadi said, “We want to invite the governor to a townhall meeting where we can discuss farm activities with him.

“The commercial farmers and other agro allied businesses in the country are about to write to him to come and tell us what he has in mind for farmers, in terms of his programmes and other activities.

“We are doing this because we want to have food sufficiency in Rivers State and what he will tell us when we meet with him will determine if he has a plan and goal for the farmers and the state at large or not.

“So, we want to have a townhall meeting which he is going to be the key speaker of the meeting and it would be like a kind of public talk.”

Over the years, farmers especially in Rivers State have complained of non political will on the part of government to mechanise farming in the state.

The farmers had also blamed government for always appointing politicians to head the Ministry of Agriculture who do not know how to relate with the real farmers in the state.

Amadi maintained that until they meet with the governor, scoring the sitting administration low or high on agriculture will be inappropriate.
