Obio/Akpor LGA Chairman Imposes Ban on Residential Gas Refilling

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, Ambassador Chijioke Ihunwo, has taken decisive action following a tragic gas explosion in the Orazi area of Port Harcourt.

Visiting the victims, he expressed profound sorrow over the incident and pledged financial support for their medical treatment.

During his visit, Ambassador Ihunwo described the situation as heartbreaking and assured the affected families of the local government’s commitment to alleviating their burden.

“It’s quite unfortunate that this is happening so early in the new year,” he stated. “I am deeply saddened by the number of persons affected. I was briefed about this tragic incident, which is why I am here to sympathize with those who lost their loved ones.

“As a local government, we will take responsibility for the medical bills of those injured and currently receiving treatment in the hospital. As a responsive administration, we cannot allow our people to bear this burden alone. We share in their pain,” he added.

In addition to visiting the victims, Ambassador Ihunwo inspected the site of the explosion and announced a strict prohibition on gas refilling operations in residential areas throughout Obio/Akpor LGA. This measure, he explained, is part of efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“Let me announce here and now that, henceforth, no one is permitted to run a gas refilling business in residential areas within Obio/Akpor,” he declared.

“To ensure compliance, I will establish a special committee tasked with enforcing this directive by inspecting streets and roads within the LGA. I urge CDC chairmen and youth leaders in the various communities to join this campaign so we can safeguard the lives and properties of our people. Anyone caught violating this ban will be arrested and prosecuted,” he warned.
