A tragic incident occurred in Ogobiri community, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, when two persons were electrocuted while attempting to steal solar streetlights.
According to a community source, on Saturday, the bodies of the deceased were discovered in the morning near the New Site of the Niger Delta University and Ogobiri roundabout.
An eyewitness described the incident, stating that the thieves had already loosened four streetlight poles and were working on the fifth when disaster struck.

“They had loosened five solar poles and were loosening the fifth pole when it fell on nearby high-tension wires. Unfortunately, there was power, and they got electrocuted,” the eyewitness explained.
One of the thieves was severely burnt and died instantly, while the other was burnt beyond recognition, with only ashes remaining.
“The ashes were still at the scene of the incident at about 11:30 am, and they still had the form of a human being,” the eyewitness said.
The other body was taken away to the mortuary, while the fallen streetlight poles remained lined up beside the road.
The incident highlights the rampant theft of streetlights in the area, which has become a growing concern.
When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Musa Mohammed, stated that he had not received the report.
“I have not received the report,” he told our correspondent.
